Popular questions

How do I book a lesson?

Open a tutor’s profile and message them, then press Book in the chat to put a lesson proposal in it. They can accept it or suggest changes, and it’s booked once you both agree.

On the proposal, Pick an open time lists when the tutor is free, from 24 hours ahead up to 14 days out, and fills in the date and time for you. If none of those suit, type the time you’d like instead.

You need to be verified before you can message or book. Once a lesson is booked, you’ll pay for it and can cancel or reschedule from Lessons.

How do I reschedule or cancel a lesson?

Open Lessons. To reschedule, propose a new time: the other person has to accept it. To cancel, use Cancel on the lesson.

Cancelling more than a day ahead is free. If a student cancels on the day, or the day before, there’s a 50% cancellation fee, which goes to the tutor as compensation, and the rest is refunded. A tutor who cancels always gives a full refund. These fees only apply to lessons paid for through Astry.

If someone doesn’t turn up at all, that’s a no-show. Pick what happened below to see who gets what.

How do I pay for a lesson?

Lessons are paid directly between you and your tutor, as arranged in your chat. Astry doesn’t take payment for them.

Resources unlock for download straight away, and the seller tells you how to pay them.

What does Astry charge?

Astry takes 17% of each lesson from the tutor, so they keep 83%. It falls the more they teach, counted over the past 7 days: 15% at 3 or more lessons, 12% at 6 or more, 10% at 8 or more, and 8% at 11 or more. It’s a rolling week, so the rate moves with how much they teach. Resource sellers keep 90%. Try it with your own numbers below.

Students are never charged a percentage on a lesson. There are two small flat fees on top of the price when you pay through Astry: 50c on anything under $10, and 50c on a video-call lesson to cover the video room.

Why do I need to verify my ID?

Every adult account verifies a government-issued photo ID before it can message, book or buy, and every tutor does before they can be listed. It takes a couple of minutes. Until then you can still browse tutors and resources.

How do I start taking bookings?

Sign up as a tutor, verify your ID, then add at least one subject with an hourly rate and your weekly availability. You’re listed in search once you’re verified and have a subject with a rate.

Add a Working With Children Check to teach students under 18.
