This is a working draft. It is not final, has not been reviewed by a lawyer, and may change substantially before it is. Please don’t rely on it as Astry’s final terms. Words in square brackets are details still to be filled in.
Cookie Policy (draft)
The cookies and on-device storage Astry uses, and how to change your choice.
1. The short version
- Astry only uses cookies that are needed to sign you in and keep the site safe.
- There are no advertising cookies, and no social-media or third-party tracking.
- We can count page views to see which pages are used, but only if you say yes. That counting uses no cookies, no IP address and no account details.
- You can change your choice at any time with the Cookie settings button on this page.
2. What cookies and on-device storage are
A cookie is a small piece of text a website asks your browser to keep and send back on later visits. Websites can also keep information in your browser’s local storage (kept until it is cleared) and session storage (cleared when you close the tab). This policy covers all three. It sits alongside our Privacy Policy.
3. Essential cookies
These are needed for Astry to work, so they don’t need your consent and can’t be switched off in the cookie banner. If you block them in your browser, you won’t be able to sign in.
| Set by | Names | What they do | How long |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clerk, our sign-in provider | __session, __client_uat and similar, plus cookies on Clerk’s own sign-in domain | Keep you signed in and protect your account. We also read whether you are signed in to choose the page colours before the page draws. | The session token lasts minutes and is renewed while you are signed in. The others last until you sign out or they expire. |
| Cloudflare Turnstile | Set by Cloudflare inside its check | Tells people from bots when you sign up, log in, rate a tutor, review a credential or resource, or list or buy a resource. | As set by Cloudflare |
Other companies’ pages
Some steps happen on another company’s page, or in a frame from them, which sets its own cookies under its own policy:
- Stripe’s payment and payout pages, once card payments are switched on. Stripe uses cookies there to process the payment and prevent fraud. Astry’s own pages don’t load Stripe.
- Persona’s ID check page, once ID checks are switched on.
- The Daily.co video call inside a lesson room, once video calls are switched on.
4. What we keep on your device
Astry keeps a few settings in your browser so pages load the way you left them. None of it is used to track you or sent to anyone else.
| Name | What it does |
|---|---|
theme, nav-layout | A copy of your theme and navigation layout, so the page draws in the right colours straight away. Your choice itself is saved on your account. Signing out removes the copy. |
signed-in, prefs-owner | Whether someone is signed in on this browser, and which account the copy of the settings belongs to, so the next person to sign in doesn’t get yours. |
chat: keys | Whether the chat panel was open, which conversation and tab, and your conversation list, so chat opens where you left it. Kept separately for each account. |
astry.referralCode | A referral code from a link you opened, until it is added to your account. Removed after 14 days. |
pendingGuardianLink | A child’s parent-link invitation you opened, so you can come back to it after signing up or checking your ID. |
astry:cookie-consent | What you chose in the cookie banner (“Essential only” or analytics allowed), so we don’t ask again on every page. |
astry:test-switcher and similar | Staff and test accounts only: tools for switching between test accounts. |
| Name | What it does |
|---|---|
onboarding:skipped | Sign-up steps you chose to skip, so they aren’t shown again in this tab. |
wwcc-notice- keys | That you closed a Working With Children Check notice. |
astry:human-pass | Proof that this tab passed the bot check, so you aren’t checked again while signing up or logging in. |
If you turn on push notifications, your browser also registers a small Astry script (a service worker) that receives them. Clearing site data for Astry in your browser removes it.
5. Usage counts (optional)
If you allow it in the cookie banner, we count page views so we can see which pages are used and which aren’t. This counting:
- only starts after you choose to allow it;
- adds one to a count for the page you opened, for that day, with any numbers or IDs in the page address taken out. That is all it records;
- uses no cookies and stores nothing on your device apart from your choice itself;
- doesn’t record your IP address, your account or anything else that could identify you;
- is done by Astry itself. Nothing is sent to an analytics company.
If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we treat it as “Essential only”: the banner doesn’t ask, and we never count your visits.
6. Your choices
The first time you visit, a banner asks you to choose “Essential only” or to allow the usage counts. You can change your choice at any time with the button below. This page is linked from the banner and from the footer of the home page.
You can also block or delete cookies and site data in your browser’s settings. Blocking essential cookies will stop you signing in, and clearing site data resets your theme on this device until you sign in again.
7. Maps and fonts
Our fonts are served from Astry’s own site, not loaded from Google. When you use the map or search for tutors near a suburb, your browser fetches map tiles from OpenFreeMap and looks up the suburb with OpenStreetMap’s Nominatim service. Those services see your IP address and what was requested, under their own policies. Astry doesn’t set any cookies for them.
8. Changes and contact
We will update this policy if what we store changes, and ask again if we ever want to use something that needs your consent. Questions go to hello@astry.com.au. Astry is run by [Legal entity name], ABN [ABN].
